Fishing at Lost Lake Wilderness Lodge
Ontario is blessed with more than 450,000 lakes many of which offer World Class
Fishing. Lost Lake has 10 of these lakes containing an abundance of fish
including seven different species. Walleye, northern pike, small mouth bass as well as
brook, lake and rainbow trout along with perch are all here for your enjoyment.
Catch
and Release Policy.
Lost Lake Wilderness Lodge is really a combination
of distinctly different lakes and rivers. This combination provides guests
with opportunities that are not available at many other places. One
huge advantage is a choice between catch and release or catch and keep a
few. Some of the lakes are reserved for the fisherman that would like the
chance to catch a large fish to photograph without taking the fish home.
This provides the angler with all the thrill of the chase without the
killing of the trophy. Certainly the best of both worlds. A photograph,
with or without a replica mount, offers a better product too, you'll be
able to pass it along to your great, great grandchildren. This year we
will supply a New Barbless
Hook design that's proven to keep the fish on 'till you want to
release them. They will cut down on trips out to the hospital, 100
kilometers away (62 miles.)
The advantage of having many lakes to choose is that
only a few are deemed catch and release. The other lakes and rivers
provide an abundance of fish to eat. Even so, it is strongly recommended
that the larger breeding fish be returned to the lake with the smaller
ones destined for the dining table. The small ones taste better anyway! To
help everyone in this common quest, the province of Ontario has finally
issued a slot size limit in the North and reduced the keeping quantity
too. It's good to know that our guests have been on the right track all
along.
Barbless
hooks are not
mandatory but simply pinching down the barbs ensures
minimum stress to the fish and an easier release for the fisherman
too. The largest recorded Northern Pike caught was over 50 inches long weighing
more than 30 pounds. It was caught by Randy Faller and interestingly, his
brother Brian caught a 49 inch Northern Pike the very next day. This
gallant catch and release effort put forth by these two sportsmen is
certainly noteworthy. Imagine, over eight feet of fresh water fish in just
2 fish. The highlight of course is yours because these
fish along with an endless supply of others are still there ready to be
caught again quite possibly by you. Martin (Moose), shown here, and his
son David often take pictures of some real "Whales" in the catch and
release lakes. They offer a steady supply of stories and great photos to
boot. They even have a video of a bear chasing a mother moose and her calf
into the lake. Great stuff to see and experience here at Lost Lake
Wilderness Lodge.
Fishing
season for all species opens the third Saturday in May. These species are
Walleye (pickerel), Northern Pike, Small Mouth Bass and Perch. Also
Speckled or Brook Trout along with Rainbow and Lake Trout. The Brook
Trout here are not to be confused with the tiny "brookies" caught down
south in streams. The "Brookies "
here are quite big, averaging over a pound with some in the 2, 3 and 4
pound range or even larger. The secret is that they are in lakes and not
in a stream. If you add all the species up that Lost Lake has to offer,
the total is seven. Lot's of action almost any time of the year. (Our
Brook trout is what United States quests call "Speckled" trout.)
Many
of the lakes have picnic areas ready for you to pull ashore and cook up
your catch. Shore lunch kits are available for the asking. All the goodies
are included such as long handled frying pan, cans of white potatoes and
beans, Fish Crisp and cooking oil. Disposable cutlery and paper plates
make clean up a breeze. Bring it all back for recycling.
Ontario's Canadian Angler of the year, Gary Hodge, has
been fishing the waters of Lost Lake and surrounding lakes for over 25
years. He obtains many of his qualifiers for the contest every year at
Lost Lake.
