Catch and Release Policy
For over nineteen years, Lost Lake Wilderness Lodge has combined the best of two worlds. One lake is an honorary Catch and Release lake while the other nine are based on an honorary conservation fishing policy. This translates into very large pike for picture taking in one lake along with delicious walleye, bass or trout for dinner in nine more lakes. Our diverse choice of waterways ensures satisfaction for everyone.

fishing-lost lake conservationThe conservation minded can fish for trophy sized fish on many of our waterways, knowing that a photo and a safe release is our preferred end result. The sportsman can find many fish in our waters that can be caught and kept for an evening meal. This combination of distinctly different lakes and rivers is what makes Lost Lake unique. Over the years we have tried many varieties of barbless hooks but the preferred method is to simply pinch down the barbs on your favorite tackle. Yes, a few more fish will be lost this way but the net result will be more fish released safely and less trips to the hospital for you while trying to remove a misplaced hook from your body. Of course no matter which waters you fish when you stay with us, it is our hope that you will release the larger breeding fish and keep the smaller ones for the frying pan. The small ones taste better anyway! To help everyone focused on this common quest, the province of Ontario has issued a slot size limit in the North and reduced the quantity of keepers. It's good to know that our guests have been on the right track all along. Catch and release ensures an opportunity exists to keep the trophy size fish in the waters. One such example are two lunker pike which were caught on back to back days by two brothers. Randy Faller’s Northern Pike was over 50 inches long and weighed more than 30 pounds. His brother Brian caught a 49 inch Northern Pike the very next day. As a result of the catch and release effort put forth by these two sportsmen, over eight feet of fresh water fish were returned to our waters for others to challenge and enjoy. This example of true sportsmen like fishing happens every day at Lost Lake Wilderness Lodge. Knowing our children and our grandchildren will always have the same opportunities as we enjoy is certainly worth the effort.

Fishing season for all species opens Saturday, May 16th this year. These include Walleye (pickerel), Northern Pike, Small Mouth Bass, Perch, Brook Trout (or speckled trout), Rainbow and Lake Trout. The Brook Trout here are not to be confused with the tiny "brookies" caught down south in streams. The "Brookies here are quite big, averaging over a pound with some growing to 2, 3 and 4 pounds or more. The secret is that they are in lakes and not in a stream.
